HP opens Global Centre in Cyberjaya
CYBERJAYA: Computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard Co opened its HP Global Centre in Cyberjaya, which it claims is the largest facility of its kind in the country. The 60-acre campus will address multiple HP and client business needs. It comprises a global applications development and support centre, as well as a global finance centre. In the near future, HP plans to house a client-centric datacentre there. The setting up of the global centre is part of HP's US$1bil (RM3.2bil) transformation plan that was announced in June. The vendor declined to say how much was spent to build the centre. It is one of the six global delivery hubs that HP has in the world. The others are in India, China, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Bulgaria. HP described the centre as the single biggest investment made by a multinational in Cyberjaya. Kevin Jones, HP Asia Pacific and Japan senior vice-president of enterprise services, said HP has made a significant investment in the country because it believes in the workforce here. "We are excited about the knowledge- and services-based economy that Malaysia has invested in and we see it as an opportunity to tap into that skill-set," he said. With the Cyberjaya centre, HP announced that it expects to increase its employee base in Malaysia by 52%. However the company would not say how many employees it has in the country now. T.F. Chong, HP (Malaysia) managing director, would only say that HP currently has 304,000 employees worldwide. He said that more than half of the workforce in the Cyberjaya centre are Malaysians, who range from entry-level graduates to Masters in Business Administration-level chartered accountants. On the international front, HP has announced that it is cutting jobs in Britain. HP is slashing 1,300 jobs in its operations in that country.
