MRT plans for third connecting line
KUALA LUMPUR: Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) is looking to have a third line named MRT Line 3 to connect its MRT Line 1 and Line 2.
MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar said the company is currently in the midst of completing the feasibility study for Line 3 which is expected to be completed by year-end.
"Once the study is complete, we will submit it to the Land Public Transport Commission and the Economic Planning Unit for further discussion.
"This Line 3 or Circle line is to connect the other MRT railway lines to help ease the congestion at certain stations where commuters won't have to come to the city centre just to board the transit to head to their preferred destination as the Line 3 will also be connecting other railway lines like the LRT and KTM," Shahril said during a press conference after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Credit Guarantee Corporation (CGC).
He declined to reveal more details about Line 3 like how many stations it will have or how much it would cost.
Shahril however said that MRT is considering Titiwangsa as one of its connecting stations as it would be a waste not to develop the location into another transportation hub like KL Sentral.
Meanwhile on the MoU signed between MRT Corp and CGC, he said it would provide access to financing for more Bumiputera sub-contractors.
He said CGC's target is to provide RM100 million to them under the MRT Line 2.
Shahril said with CGC's financing, the group will no longer face too many problems in getting their work started and will be successful in completing their contracts.
The MoU signing ceremony was witnessed by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and CGC chairman Datuk Agil Natt.
